Job Description

This post relates to the teaching of the BA Honours in Early Childhood Care and Education and BA Honours in Social Care Practice programme and relevant postgraduate programmes. The successful applicant will be involved in teaching professional practice components of the early years undergraduate and postgraduate award and pertinent other activities as decided based on the knowledge, skills, and competencies of the successful candidate. The successful candidate will also be involved in the student in placement component of the award. These programmes are classified as ‘designated programmes’ for the purposes of ATU Sligo’s Child Protection Policy and accordingly are subject to vetting by the Garda Central Vetting Unit. Successful candidates will be subject to satisfactory clearance from Garda. The Department supports innovative approaches to teaching and learning, including team-teaching; problem and enquiry based learning; technology-supported and online and distance learning; engagement with external partners; internationalisation and anti-oppressive practice. It strongly supports a student-centred approach to learning.

The appointee will be expected to contribute to the teaching and development of the Technological University’s programmes in Social Sciences.

Qualifications Required

Applicants must, as a minimum, hold an Honour’s Degree at 2.2 or better in a Early Childhood and Care

Qualified at Masters/Ph.D. level in a relevant field

Previous lecturing experience in the field of early years in higher education institutes

Demonstrable record of relevant active research and publications Such factors may or may not be taken into account should there be a need for short listing of applicants for interview.

Experience Required

At least three years relevant post-qualification experience working in the early years sector

Further Information

The Assistant Lecturer will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration. The appointee should, carry out such duties as are assigned by management including but not limited to: – a. teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by management of the Technological University, day or evening, up to 630 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students where appropriate; b. carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examinations work and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities; c. providing academic input on existing and new courses and course development; d. engaging in research, consultancy and development work as appropriate; e. participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened by management and course leaders; f. maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management; g. engaging in promotion including student recruitment as appropriate;

h. participating in development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements; i. participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of their department/school and the Technological University; j. directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work; The performance of these duties will require attendance in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week. The appointee will carry out the lawful instructions of the President and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister for Education and Skills.
